Opal Rogers

Opal Lee Rogers, age 80, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 19, 2020. She resided in New Braunfels, TX, but was formerly a resident of Claiborne County, TN for most of her life. She was born on March 17, 1940 to the late Rev. Clifford Hatfield and Dollie (Bowman) Hatfield.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Ray Rogers and her daughter-in-law Donna Rogers.

She is survived by her children: Kenny Rogers of Speedwell, TN; David (Pattie) Rogers of Harrogate, TN; Jeff (Jackie) Rogers of Harrogate, TN; and Amanda (Gonzalo) Torres of New Braunfels, TX, and her sister Deloris Mayes of Knoxville, TN. She was also survived by seven grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. She was a strong and truly remarkable woman, and she was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.

Opal was a member of the First Baptist Church of Harrogate, TN, and she served faithfully as a deacon’s wife for 46 years. She also served for many years as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the church choir, and was always a very active member of the Women’s Missionary Union. She loved Jesus, her family, and her church very much. She was an amazing seamstress, and she could play the piano beautifully. She enjoyed cooking, and she made the best chicken and dumplings in the world. Her favorite color was green, which was fitting for her birthday (she loved that it was on a holiday!) Opal was always up for an adventure, and she loved to travel with her family. One of her adventure highlights was being a contestant on the Price is Right in 2014, which she loved telling people about. Another one of her favorite pastimes was having tea parties with the grandchildren, and she always enjoyed her time spent with them.

The family will receive friends at the Harrogate First Baptist church on Sunday, May 24, at 2 pm. Funeral services will be at 3 pm, with the Rev. Terry England presiding. Graveside services will follow at Carr’s Cemetery in Speedwell, TN.
