Mark Gilbert

March 9, 1974 — March 10, 2021

Martinsville, IN

Mark Allison Gilbert, age 46, of Martinsville, Indiana passed Wednesday March 10, 2021 from a motorcycle accident. Mark was born May 9th, 1974 in Middlesboro, Kentucky.  He is the son of Reverend Paul “Woody” and Barbara (Duncan) Gilbert. Mark graduated from Bell County High School in May 1992, joined the United States Army in August of that year and served over six years.   Mark was employed at Amtrak in Beech Grove where he was a carman/welder with special training in asbestos. The Lord called Mark to preach His word blessing his congregation with several sermons.  He was a great servant to God’s church - preaching, teaching Sunday School, helping with the youth group program, and annually honoring the Veterans - always willing to help others in any capacity.   Mark was preceded in death by his grandparents Reverend Woodrow and Rosie Lee Gilbert and Ragon Allison and Cora Rains Duncan, all of Middlesboro Kentucky.

Mark is survived by his wife of nearly 10 years, Keri (Ott) Gilbert and their four rescue dogs Daisy, Jessie, LuLu, and Duke of Martinsville; parents, Paul Woody and Barbara Gilbert of Middlesboro Kentucky; and two sons, Kyle Mark and Lyndon Ray Barnes Gilbert both of Rochester, Indiana.  Mark was a Godparent to four children that he is also survived by: Claire Wells, John Wyatt Kapfhammer, and Tanner & Gage Ott. He is also survived by many aunts and uncles around the country, including Gene Duncan of Middlesboro Kentucky that he was especially close with.  Survivors also include a half-brother Joshua (Amy) Gilbert of Cumberland Gap, Tennessee and an important life-long friend, Terry Wells of Imperial, Missouri.  Other survivors, all of Indiana, include his in-laws, Wayne and Bonnie Ott of Greenwood, siblings-in-laws Brad (Tonya) Ott of Camby, Wendy Ott (Steve) Callahan of Sheridan, and Mindy Ott (Darryl) Edwards of Martinsville. He was the proud uncle to eight nieces and nephews with an incredibly special bond to Tanner and Gage Ott. Special people that he had gone to church with while growing up and he thought of as family.  Chris John, Dedra, Larry, Doug, Mike, Terry, Lisa, Dana, Allison, Edward, Willie, Jane, Brian, Amy, Tessa, Aaron, Jason, Dennis Wayne and Dennis.

Mark’s quiet time consisted of reading, woodworking, playing cards, and metalworking. He was adventurous and enjoyed many activities including playing with his four rescue dogs, hiking, CrossFit, four-wheeling, DIY projects, ziplining, firearm marksmanship, working on and restoring all types of vehicles, and riding his motorcycle.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 19, 2021 from 4:00 - 7:00 PM at Cawood Funeral Home Chapel.  Funeral services will follow at 7:00 PM at Cawood Funeral Home Chapel in Middlesboro, Kentucky with Rev. Lonnie Lyke and Rev. Mike Padgett officiating.  Music will be provided by the Church singers.   A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 AM, on Saturday, March 20, 2021 at Green Hills Memorial Gardens with Full Military Honors.  Pallbearers will be Terry Wells, Jason Marsee, Doug Hensley, Mike Hensley, Dennis Short and Will Brown. Honorary Pallbearers:  Kyle Gilbert, Lyndon Barnes Gilbert, Gene Duncan, James Partin, Sam Wells, and Darryl Edwards.

Because of his faith in Jesus, Mark is in a far better place with a peace that passes all understanding.
